Why pipework quality decides a project's lifespan.

On commercial fit-outs the finish you don't see matters most. Here's what we look for.

When a main contractor walks onto site, the first thing they notice about a plumbing installation isn't the boiler or the bathroom fittings — it's the pipework. Clean, straight, properly clipped pipe runs tell you everything about the quality of the team on site.

At Prime, pipework is where we've built our reputation. It sounds simple, but running pipes neatly and efficiently is a genuine skill that separates competent plumbers from exceptional ones. Every bend, every clip, every junction point matters.

On commercial projects — schools, hotels, office buildings — the pipework is the skeleton of the entire mechanical installation. If it's run poorly, you'll see problems for years: water hammer, uneven heating, difficult maintenance access, and premature failures at joints.

We use copper, plastic, and Trac pipe depending on the application. Each material has its place. Copper for exposed runs where aesthetics matter, plastic for concealed runs where speed and cost are factors, and Trac pipe for gas and commercial applications where flexibility reduces fitting time without compromising safety.

One thing we never compromise on is support and clipping. Unsupported pipe runs expand and contract with temperature changes, creating stress at joints. Over time, this causes leaks. We clip at the correct intervals specified by manufacturers — not the wider spacing you often see on site when teams are rushing.

The best compliment we receive is when a site manager or architect walks past our pipework and comments on how tidy it looks. That's the standard we hold ourselves to on every single project, whether it's a £50k refurbishment or a £2m new build.
